Issues a notice to the Kolkata Police Commissioner, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that the police paraded three persons in a semi-nude condition with ropes tied around their waists in Kolkata, West Bengal. A day before the incident, an 18-year-old youth and his 19-year-old friend, who were reportedly seen with a minor girl, were beaten and humiliated by the girl’s family members at her house. The youth’s father, whom the girl’s family summoned, was also assaulted. Subsequently, all three were stripped and forced to walk naked on the road at gunpoint.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights. Therefore, it has issued a notice to the Kolkata Police Commissioner, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.

According to the media report, carried on 28th October 2026, the police brought three arrested persons, including the girl’s father, her maternal uncle and his friend, to the same locality and made them walk shirtless and barefoot for over 100 metres purportedly for reconstruction of the crime scene.
