Union Minister of Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan arrived in Patna today during his one-day visit to Bihar. The Union Minister participated in the Makhana Festival 2025 held at Gyan Bhawan, Gandhi Maidan, Patna, and released the report, “Prosperity from Makhana Culture.”
In his address, Mr. Chouhan noted that Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi recently provided a historic gift of ₹64,000 crore to the youth, especially those of Bihar. The Minister said, “The clouds are raining in Bihar and it is raining development. Today, the sun of a developed India is shining on Bihar’s destiny.”
Union Minister Shri Chouhan also mentioned the recent increase in the Minimum Support Price ( MSP) announced by the central government for farmers . He said that the central government will purchase the produce of Bihar farmers, including lentils, black gram, and pigeon pea, at the minimum support price.
Describing makhana as a “wonderful boon” for the poor, Mr. Chauhan said that Bihar has become a center for makhana production not only in the country but also globally. He informed that while makhana was previously grown on only 3,000 hectares, it has now expanded to 35,000 to 40,000 hectares.
Shri Shivraj Singh informed that to promote makhana production and marketing, the Central Government has issued a notification establishing the Makhana Board. This board will play a key role in research, development, marketing, branding, and promotion of makhana. Additionally, approximately ₹475 crore has been approved for the development of modern machinery and new varieties for makhana processing and production.
Mr. Chauhan appealed to the youth of Bihar to establish startups in the makhana sector and assured them of all possible support from the central government. He said, “Our goal is to ensure that makhana reaches dining tables not only in India but across the world, and that farmers’ incomes continue to grow.”
