Issues notices to the District Magistrate and Police Commissioner, Gautam Budh Nagar, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks
The report expected to include the status of the investigation, as well as compensation, if any, paid to the NoK of the victims
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that on 26th July 2026, a sanitation worker and a security guard died after inhaling toxic gases inside a sewage treatment plant at a residential society in NOIDA, Gautam Budh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. Reportedly, the sanitation worker entered the sewage treatment plant to clean a tank and lost consciousness. When the worker did not come out, a security guard from the residential society entered the tank to rescue him but also lost consciousness.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights. Accordingly, it has issued notices to the District Magistrate and Police Commissioner, Gautam Budh Nagar, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. The report is expected to include the status of the investigation, as well as compensation, if any, paid to the next of kin of the victims.
According to the media report, carried on 27th July 2026, both victims were pulled out by the police and fire brigade personnel and taken to the hospital, where they were declared dead during the course of treatment.
