Benefits for Industry and Consumers
The meeting is expected to benefit Indian manufacturers by enhancing awareness of international measurement standards, conformity assessment requirements and the OIML Certification System. This can support the development of quality products and facilitate access to international markets.
Greater harmonisation of measurement requirements can also help reduce technical barriers to trade and avoid duplication in testing and certification, where applicable. For consumers, reliable and accurate measurements are essential to ensuring fairness in transactions, correct quantity declarations and greater confidence in goods and services.
The event will also provide India with an opportunity to share its experience in regulatory reforms, digitalisation and Ease of Doing Business, while contributing to international discussions on modern and effective legal metrology systems.
International Cooperation in Legal Metrology
The International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1955 to promote the global harmonisation of legal metrology procedures. It develops international recommendations, standards and related documents for measuring instruments used in trade, industry, healthcare, safety and environmental protection.
The International Committee of Legal Metrology (CIML) is the principal decision-making body responsible for guiding the technical and administrative activities of the OIML. Its annual meeting provides a global platform for deliberations on policy matters, technical developments and international cooperation in legal metrology.
The hosting of the 61st CIML Meeting reinforces India’s commitment to international collaboration and the development of harmonised measurement standards, supporting fair trade, consumer protection and confidence in measurement systems worldwide.
