In view of growing concerns on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), the European Union has notified an amendment to EU Regulation (EU) 2021/405, through Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 187/2026/EC, which will come into effect from September 2026.If India does not meet the regulation by that time, the export of animal products could have been under cloud. Currently, the export of fish and fishery products to EU is around USD 1.125 Billion.
Through proactive and timely measures undertaken by the Government of India, the country has been included in the list of nations authorised for the entry of aquaculture products, eggs, honey and animal casings into the European Union beyond September 2026, with conditional provisions applicable for milk and poultry products. This inclusion ensures continued market access for Indian animal-origin products in the EU despite the enhanced regulatory requirements.
This significant development is the outcome of sustained efforts by the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, in close coordination with the Export Inspection Council (EIC) and other concerned stakeholders. The Department of Commerce has been actively engaging with the European Commission to address regulatory and market access issues, while the EIC has played a crucial role in strengthening India’s Official Control System, including inspection, testing and certification mechanisms, in line with EU regulatory standards.
The Department of Commerce, along with the Export Inspection Council and other stakeholders such as the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), will continue to work closely with EU-approved establishments and regulatory authorities of the European Union to ensure smooth implementation of the amended regulations and to further strengthen food quality and safety assurance for global markets, including the EU.
India’s inclusion under the amended EU regulation is expected to facilitate enhanced market access for Indian exporters, boost trade flows and create new opportunities across relevant animal product sectors. The Government of India remains committed to promoting exports, strengthening institutional capacities and deepening economic cooperation with key trading partners, including the European Union.
