India’s wholesale prices rise 0.83% y/y in December

NEW DELHI, Jan 14 (Reuters) – India’s wholesale prices rose 0.83% year-on-year in December after a 0.32% decline a month earlier, government data showed on Wednesday.
Economists polled by Reuters expected wholesale prices to rise 0.3% year-on-year in December.
Inflation in December picked up primarily due to an increase in the cost of manufacturing in sectors such machinery, food products and textiles, a government statement said.

KEY NUMBERS

* Wholesale food prices were flat in December compared with a 2.6% decline in the prior month.
* Vegetable prices in December declined 3.5% year-on-year after a 20.23% drop in November.
* Prices of manufactured products rose 1.82% year-on-year in December compared with a 1.33% increase in the prior month.
* Fuel and power prices fell 2.31% year-on-year in December compared with a decline of 2.27% a month earlier.
