Ministry of Jal Shakti launches ‘Our Toilet, Our Future’ campaign on World Toilet Day 2025

Nationwide campaign will be run from 19 November 2025 to Human Rights Day to be celebrated on 10 December 2025

The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation of the Ministry of Jal Shakti launched a nationwide campaign ‘Our Toilet, Our Futureon World Toilet Day 2025.

The ‘Our Toilet, Our Futurecampaign emphasizes the importance of toilets and ensuring their proper maintenance so that people can be provided with safe sanitation and preparation for a clean and healthy future. It emphasizes assessment, repair and aesthetic improvement of the functionality of rural toilets for both community sanitation complexes (CSCs) and individual household toilets (IHHLs). This campaign is in line with the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin).

The main objectives of the campaign are as follows:

  • Enhancing and repairing the functionality of CSC and IHHL
  • Evaluation and strengthening of existing operating and maintenance systems for community toilets
  • Encourage and promote communities for the beautification of their CSCs and IHHL
  • Creating awareness on the following topics in the community and especially in schools: (i) Importance of sanitation and hygiene for the individual, community and country (ii) Safe operation of faecal waste, including retrofitting or community moving towards faecal management sludge system (iii) climate resilience and service delivery protocols.
  • Public participation to strengthen collective responsibility for overall sanitation

Since the launch of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) in 2014, India has made unprecedented progress towards ensuring sanitation in rural areas and making villages Open Defecation Free (ODF). Till 2019, more than 11 crore toilets have been constructed. The Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural) Phase-II was launched in the year 2020 and aims to ensure the sustainability of ODF as a major component of the ODF Plus model village. During the ‘Our Toilet, Our Futurecampaign, the States/UTs have been requested to work on strengthening the ground systems under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin).

The campaign has been launched to enhance the participation of various sectors and communities under which responsibilities have been allocated for the activities to be carried out during the campaign period at Gram Panchayat, Block and District level in the States/UTs. All concerned departments at the State/UT level have been advised to be involved.

States/UTs have also been requested to identify local eminent personalities/Padma Awardees/Retired Armed Forces and Paramilitary Forces personnel/Senior Citizens/Youth Groups (NSS, NYKS, NCC etc.) and school children and involve them in various activities aimed at spreading awareness and maintaining toilet use and hygiene. Honouring sanitation workers and distribution of IHHL acceptance letters to eligible beneficiaries is also part of this campaign.

The campaign will conclude on Human Rights Day i.e. 10 December 2025.
